The canoe was a natural fit: tough, simple, and perfect for postwar America, where families were hitting the road, exploring national parks, and making the most of the new interstate system.
The first aluminum Grumman canoe hit the water in 1946, and it quickly became a fixture at camps, cabins, and outfitters across the country.
The Grumman faithful say our canoes are virtually indestructible, with no real maintenance beyond a rinse. Our canoes aren’t something you buy and replace—they become part of one’s legacy—something to keep, use hard, and pass down.

Plastic canoes are petroleum-based, prone to UV damage, and often non-recyclable. Many shed microplastics into lakes and rivers as they wear. Grumman aluminum is fully recyclable, non-toxic, and doesn’t pollute as it ages. It’s a better choice for the long run—and the water our children paddle in.

I own two of these. One is a 1974, the other is a 1981. Both are in great shape, which is a testimony to their longevity. They both sit outside in my backyard. Maintenance consists of hosing them out each spring. They are used on lakes, large rivers, and narrow creeks. I pole them, paddle them, row them, and sail them. I have 7 canoes and 4 kayaks, but this pair of Grummies gets used the most. Great boats!

We love our Grumman 18′ canoe – just don’t tell anybody that we use it just as much as the tin boat. The new plastic canoes don’t have a keel and many have rocker in the hull. That makes them blow all over the place and zig zag when you paddle. The 18′ Grumman tracks as straight as an arrow and since displacement speed is a factor of length, it will literally blow past every paddleboard, kayak and shorter canoe on the lakes.
